What Is Market Comparables?

Similar vehicles sold or listed in your area used to establish pre-loss value or prove diminished value.

Definition

Market comparables (comps) are recent sales or active listings of vehicles that closely match yours in year, make, model, trim, mileage, and condition. They are the most credible evidence in diminished value and ACV disputes because they reflect what real buyers actually pay.

Why it matters for your claim

Insurers often rely on internal valuation tools that may not reflect your local market. Independent comps shift the conversation from the insurer's estimate to verifiable market data.

  • Use at least 3–5 strong comps when possible.
  • Match trim level and options — a base model is not a comp for a fully loaded vehicle.
  • Adjust for mileage differences between your car and each comp.
  • Prefer clean-history comps when proving diminished value loss.
